Lately there has been a lot of talk about hydrogen and the benefits of hydrogen as an alternative energy, but in reality, what is green hydrogen and what are its benefits? In this blog we will talk about this chemical element that is revolutionizing the industry.
Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant chemical element in nature, it is almost always bonded to another element, such as water and in most organic compounds.
It is said to be an inexhaustible compound, which can be used as clean, universal and inexhaustible energy, it is found in several chemical compounds. Hence its importance and the fact that many governments want to pioneer the production and creation of this element as a supplement to hydrocarbons.
Green hydrogen H2 renewable
Defined as an energy vector that comes from renewable sources and with zero CO2 emissions, it is produced mainly through the electrolysis of water. This process consists of the separation of the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen through the application of electrical energy from renewable sources.
Green hydrogen, or H2 as it is known, is a cleaner fuel that is produced from renewable electricity from the sun and wind and generated from water. It is an alternative when electrification is not possible and an effective way to reduce pollutant gas emissions and mitigate adverse effects of climate change.
Main advantages
The main advantage is that it can be stored, although it is still a challenge today because storage logistics are not available.
It has multiple uses in industry and the idea is that it will be developed as an alternative fuel in the automotive industry, aeronautics, land transport, maritime, general industry and households.
H2 as a key element for the energy transition
Temperatures are one degree Celsius higher than in pre-industrial times, nevertheless the spanish government is working nowadays to develop this type of initiative.
According to the Minister of Science and Innovation in Spain, “we must work on sectoral technological proposals of great depth capable of mobilizing and aligning the scientific, technological and industrial fabric”, thus referring to the idea of promoting green hydrogen as an alternative and solution to mitigate environmental damage.
Green H2 is a key element in the energy transition and has become a fundamental initiative in the decarbonization process. Despite the high cost of obtaining it, the challenge is to improve the processes in the supply chain; storage, transport and dosing processes, in order to reduce costs in the future.
Classification of green H2
Today hydrogen is classified according to its color and origin as follows:
- Black or brown hydrogen: it is a product of carbon massification that releases carbon dioxide CO.
- Gray hydrogen: produced through steam reforming of methane from natural gas. This is the most widely used today, although it generates carbon dioxide and is highly polluting.
- Blue hydrogen: CO2 carbon dioxide emissions are captured and stored and subsequently produced.
- Green hydrogen: it is produced from the process of electrolysis of water, which uses renewable sources such as photovoltaic, hydroelectric, in order to split oxygen and hydrogen.
SPR Group in the green hydrogen industry.
Our company SPR Group also wants to be in line with this trend, and in its strategic plan for the future, plans to make significant investments for the production of green hydrogen. We would like be pioneers in obtaining this energy vector that is revolutionizing the industry.
Green hydrogen is expected to be the most efficient alternative, due to its characteristics, in spite of obtaining and producing it remains a major challenge, since nowadays several companies are working to improve this process.
